Cryptocurrency scams

Unlike traditional currencies, cryptocurrencies are not regulated by banks or governments. Unfortunately, scammers take advantage of this. The inherent anonymity and lack of security of cryptocurrencies make it easy for them to target and steal funds. If you've been the victim of a cryptocurrency scam, you're not alone: we're here to help. We've helped our clients recover over £135 million in losses due to fraud and scams.

Fake Investment Platforms

Cryptocurrency scammers often create fake investment platforms that mimic legitimate websites, promising high returns and low risk. They may use professional designs, attractive recommendations, and even imitate real platforms to appear credible.

These platforms trick users into depositing funds in cryptocurrencies and then disappear or block access once the deposit is made. Victims are often tricked into "reinvesting" to achieve even higher returns, compounding their losses.

To protect yourself, be wary of unrealistic promises and thoroughly research any platform before investing.

Phishing Emails or SMS Impersonating Exchanges

Cryptocurrency scammers often send fake emails or SMS messages that appear to come from trusted exchanges, tricking you into clicking links or providing sensitive information. These messages can appear very deceptive and sometimes even imitate official logos or addresses. Clicking the link may redirect you to a fake website designed to steal your login credentials or personal information.

Always carefully check the sender's address, avoid clicking on suspicious links, and log in using official apps or websites.

Social Media Phishing Scams

Scammers often pose as cryptocurrency influencers or official or celebrity social media accounts, offering false investment opportunities or promising quick profits. They may contact you directly, ask for money, or encourage you to send cryptocurrency in exchange for higher returns.

Always verify the identity of anyone requesting funds online (especially on social media) and report suspicious accounts.

Ponzi and Pyramid Schemes

Ponzi and pyramid schemes promise high returns by attracting new investors instead of real profits. Early investors may receive returns, funded by new participants. Ultimately, the scam fails, and most investors lose everything.

Be wary of any investment that relies on a constant influx of new participants or that promises unusually high returns with extremely low risk.

Hacked Wallet

Hackers can access your encrypted wallet through phishing attacks, weak security measures, or malware. Once your private key is stolen, they can steal your funds. In some cases, they can even completely lock your wallet.

To protect yourself, use a strong and unique password, enable two-factor authentication, and consider using a hardware wallet for added security.
