Purchase fraud
Online shopping scams are the most common type of authorized push payment (APP) fraud, with over 131,000 cases and losses reaching £87 million in 2024.
Authorized push payments refer to bank transfers verified by the account holder, typically used to pay for online services. In online shopping scams, account holders are often tricked by scammers via online marketplaces or social media platforms into authorizing payments themselves.
If you're looking to buy a car, a new tech product like a MacBook or iPhone, furniture, or a vacation home, be wary of offers that seem too good to be true. Scammers often use fake websites or post fake listings on legitimate websites like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and Gumtree.
Common Types of Online Shopping Fraud
Facebook Marketplace Scams
While Facebook Marketplace is a great place to find deals, it's also a breeding ground for scams. Buyers on these platforms receive less protection than registered and legitimate stores. Be especially wary of offers that seem too good to be true, especially if the seller requires a deposit or upfront payment.
Scams on Instagram and TikTok
Scammers can easily create fake Instagram and TikTok accounts, impersonating legitimate sellers or brands. Be wary of accounts that use expensive items as a front to sell counterfeit or low-quality products.
Scams on eBay
Ebay is a popular online payment platform, but scams exist there too. Always use secure payment methods and check seller reviews, especially for expensive items. Be wary of sellers who require payment outside of eBay to avoid transaction fees. If possible, inspect the item in person before making large transactions.
Scams on PayPal
PayPal is a common tool for online transactions, but scammers can exploit it to provide false tracking information or fictitious shipping details. Always avoid using PayPal's "Friends and Family" payment option, as it offers no buyer protection, and PayPal does not provide support if any issues arise.
Car Scams
Buying a car is a significant investment. Scammers may falsely claim ownership of a vehicle or grossly misrepresent its condition. Always inspect the vehicle and verify its history before making a payment.
Vacation Scams
Scammers may use social media posts and fake travel websites to lure victims with incredibly low prices on airline tickets, rentals, and vacations. Always verify the authenticity of such offers before making any payments.
Puppy Scams
In puppy scams, the "seller" often offers nonexistent or abused puppies at below-market prices. Victims may be tricked into paying a deposit or upfront payment, only to receive neither the puppy nor a puppy in poor health.
